The digital materials which form this collection were created as part of the EAP121 project.
The original materials were created by the African National Congress and its members during its existence as an active political organisation. Following the Choma Declaration of 1973 the ANC was merged into the UNIP and effectively ceased operating, and its archives came into the custody of the United National Independence Party, who have maintained them ever since.

- Material in this fonds was selected for digitisation by the EAP121 Project Holder. The project holder took the decision not to digitise some of the material which constitutes the physical ANC collection, predominantly when that material consisted of published records which were available elsewhere, but also for records deemed by the project holder to be of no historical value, such as applications for educational bursaries.

The archives of the ANC have been subject to various interventions and reorganisations during their accumulation and subsequent deposit with the United National Independence Party. Sources of information about the archive are given below:
