Extracts from the seven books of the Abhidhamma (Aphitham chet khamphi) combined with the legend of a famous Buddhist monk known as Phra Malai who visited the Buddhist heavens and hells.
Colophon: A colophon at the end of the text gives the date 2392 B.E., the Year of the Monkey, during the reign of King Rama III. It also lists the names of a mother and her two children as donors who paid eight tamlung, two baht and one fuang for the production of this manuscript, a textile wrapper and a gilt chest to store it in.
Illustrations: 16 paired illustrations in outstanding quality.
The illustrations represent scenes from the legend of Phra Malai, including the lotus picking scene, his visit to the sacred stupa Chulamani Chedi in Tavatimsa heaven, celestial beings (devata) and the god Indra, Bodhisattas in Tusita heaven, as well as the tortures of the damned in hell. Included are also illustrations of Buddhist monks during morbid meditations and misbehaving monks during a funeral wake.
