Qur’ān, in Arabic, a fine illuminated copy from Aceh.
Contents: f.1v, a prayer for the prophet and other notables, and a mnemonic poem (nazam) made up of the first words of each juz’; ff.2v-255r, text of the Qur’an; f.255v, a prayer on completion of the Qur’an.
Text frames are ruled lines of red-black-red-black ink. Verse (ayah) markers are yellow roundels outlined in black. Surah headings in red ink are set in ruled frames sometimes flanking or flanked by the final words of the preceding surah. The first words of each juz’ are in red and the line is set within red-black-red ruled ink frames, with an elaborate marginal ornament centred on circle with concentric borders.
Other marginal ornaments, all constructed on the same circle base, mark parts of a juz' (thumn, rub‘, nisf). The actual textual division is marked in the text with a composite 4-roundel, with sometimes an inscription in the margin, but the ornament is always placed in the middle of the vertical margin. Illuminated pages: in addition to the marginal ornaments there are three double decorated frames in the 'Acehnese' style, in red, yellow, black and reserved white:
ff.2v-3r: S. al-Fatihah and beg. of S. al-Baqarah
ff.132v-133r: marking the beginning of juz’ 16
ff.254v-255r: S. al-Falaq and S. al-Nas
