Provenance:
The manuscript was written for Giovanni Matteo Giberti, Bishop of Verona, by Michael Damascenus, the Cretan, at Rome, in 1524, according to a colophon at the end of Sozomen's text, f 140v: ''Μιχαῆλος Δαμασκηνὸς ὁ Κρής˙ τῷ αἰδεσιμωτάτῳ, καὶ πανσοφωτάτῳ κυρίῳ, κυρίῳ/ Ἰωάννῃ Ματθαίῳ τῷ Γιβέρτῳ, καὶ ἀξίως ἐπισκόπω Βερώνης, ταύτην τὴν ἑρμείου τοῦ Σωζομένου περὶ ἐκκλησιαστικῆς ἱστορί(ας) θεῖαν ἐξέγραψα βίβλον/ ἐν ἔτει ἀπὸ τῆς τοῦ σωτῆρος ἡμῶν Ἰ(ησο)ῦ Χ(ριστο)ῦ ἁγί(ας) Σαρκώσεως ᾳφκδ’, μηνὸς Ὀκτωβρίου ιδῃ/ ἐν τῇ ἀρχαἰα τῶν Ρωμαίων πόλει''.

Purchased at Sotheby’s (J. E. Severne sale, of items collected by Michael Wodhull), 11-21 January 1886. Bought using the Bridgewater fund (£12,000 bequeathed in 1829 by Francis Henry Egerton, 8th Earl of Bridgewater (b. 1756, d. 1829).
