Material: Parchment.

Foliation: ff 244 + ii. f i is the paste-down on the front board. One unfoliated paper flyleaf at the beginning and three at the end.

Dimensions: 190 x 130 mm.

Ruling: 125 x 90 mm, 23 lines per page.

Binding: wooden (oak?) boards, possibly the original, with grooved edges, rebacked. Formerly fully covered in leather, fragment remains at the back edge. Images of the edges can be seen on Digitised Manuscripts, the fore-edge as f vi recto, the lower edge as f vii recto, and the upper edge as f viii recto.

Decoration: 19 large headpieces in red and/or brown or yellow with penwork decoration at the beginning of most books (ff 1r, 11r, 72r, 96r, 119v, 136r, 146v, 155v, 163r, 169v, 175r, 179r, 186r, 191r, 194r, 198v, 216v, 234v, 241r). Simple headpieces in red or brown. Large initials in brown and red with penwork decoration. Small initials in red. Text in red.

Produced in the Levant, according to J. W. Burgon, based on the ornamentation: f ii recto

James Woodhouse (d. 1866), Treasurer-General of the Ionian Islands: no. 13 in his collection: inscription recording his number (f i recto); printed notice by Burgon stating that it was offered for sale in 1869, 1872, and 1875 (f ii recto).

John William Burgon (b. 1813, d. 1888), dean of Chichester and biblical scholar: inscription 'E libris Johannis Guilielmi Burgon S. T. B. Coll. Oriel. Socii, die 17 Febr. AD 1875' (f i recto); printed notice by Burgon about the manuscript in The Guardian 16 August 1882 (f ii recto).

Purchased from Rev. W. F. Rose 8 July 1893, using the Farnborough Fund (£3,000 bequeathed in 1838 by Charles Long, Baron Farnborough (b. 1761, d. 1838), a cousin of Francis Henry Egerton, 8th Earl of Bridgewater (b. 1756, d. 1829), founder of the collection.
