- Physical Characteristics:

Material: Parchment.
Foliation: ff 75 + (ii) + 302.
Dimensions: 290 x 205 mm.
Ruling: 185 x 105 mm, 30 lines per page.
Binding: Bound in wooden boards covered with velvet and lined on the inner sides with embroidered silk. Forming a border round the upper cover are silver-gilt plates worked with figures, of post-Byzantine date but probably based on a 14th-century template: Rhoby (2012). The plates at the top and bottom have half-length figures of the four Evangelists (in the order John, Mark, Matthew and Luke) as well as the Apostles Peter and Paul. The plates on the sides depict scenes from the life of St Demetrius, according to Rhoby (2012), arguing against Walter (1970) who identified them as showing the overthrow of the heretics Nestorius and Noetus. Three inscriptions accompany the plates, though only two are now intact, the first reading Βάλλει κατὰ γῆς τὸν παλαμναῖον Νέστωρ/ ἔχεις, ἀθλητὰ, σῆς ἀριστείας ἄθλον; the second κτείνεις νοητὸν σταυρικῷ τύπῳ μόνῳ. The fragmentary third inscription is reconstructed by Rhoby (2012) as ΚΤΥ Τ?ΟΝ / ΚΟ?Κ ΥΠ / ΧΜ ΤΡ / Σ. In the centre of the cover is a gilt plate worked with a Deesis (the figures of Jesus, the Virgin Mary and John the Baptist), the nimbuses enamelled, and, above and below, the symbols of the four evangelists and cherubim.
Decoration: Illuminated head pieces and initials. Illuminated portraits of St Luke, ff 76v and 162v, and St John the Evangelist, f 126v. Two stubs of purple vellum leaves before f 76r, which contained the table of chapters for the Gospel of Luke in gold letters. For conservation reasons only one of these stubs could be photographed for Digitised Manuscripts (f 75*r-v).
