MSS Mus. 131-132. FRANZ JOSEF HAYDN: ‘Il Ritorno di Tobia’ (Hob.XXI:1): oratorio (words Giovanni Gastone Boccherini); circa 1783. Full score, in Haydn’s original version of 1775, before the revision of 1784. Copy, in ink, in at least two different hands. Each volume of the score is bound with a title page bearing the title in French within an ornate printed border, and the inscription ‘Chez Louis de Rossi Marchand de Musique a Rome au Theatre de la Valle’, suggesting that the copy was produced in connection with the performance of the oratorio in Rome in 1783. Paper ruled with between 10 and 14 staves. Full score published in Joseph Haydn Werke, Reihe xxviii, Band 1 (Munich: G. Henle, 1963), ed. E. F. Schmid. For another copy of extracts from the oratorio, made by Vincent Novello from another manuscript, see Add. 65399. Owned in 19th cent. by William Shore and sold by him to Novello & Co. in 1870: five letters in his hand relating to the transaction are now MS Mus 133 D. Formerly Loan 93.21. Sold at Christie’s, 14 June 1989 (lot 8) and purchased from Lisa Cox (cat. 30, no. 36), 18 Sept. 1995.
Two volumes. 212 x 283mm. Paper bindings with manuscript labels on spines.
