MS Mus. 143. LEONARDO VINCI AND OTHERS: arias and duets; circa 1731. Score, written in ink in the same hand throughout, on ten staves per page, with an index in the same hand on f. 1. Unless otherwise stated, all the pieces are arias by Leonardo Vinci (b. circa 1696, d. 1730) and are scored for soprano, two violins, viola and basso continuo. Nos. 1-6 and 8-16 are from his opera ‘Alessandro nell’Indie’, first performed at the Teatro delle Dame, Rome, in 1730; for a complete score of the opera, see R.M.23.c.8.-10. The manuscript is of Italian provenance, probably from Rome, where all of the named operas other than Handel’s ‘Poro’ were first performed. A note in Vincent Novello’s hand on f. 1 records that it was given to him by Domenico Dragonetti. Purchased at Sotheby’s, 26 May 2000 (lot 272).
