MSS Mus. 235-236. ISIDORE DE LARA: ‘La Luce dell’Asia’, opera in a prologue and four acts to a libretto by William Beatty-Kingston after Sir Edwin Arnold’s ‘The Light of Asia’, translated by G. Mazzucato; [1892]. Full score. Italian. Copy, in ink, with autograph and other annotations and additions in pencil, red ink and red and blue crayon. Cuts are marked at several points by paper pasted over portions of the score. The second volume bears a label on the cover reading ‘Lumière de l’Asie: 1er Manuscrit. Orchestre’. First performed Covent Garden, 11 June 1892. The work was to have been performed a year earlier at Covent Garden as a cantata, and was revised and expanded as an opera for the 1892 season. Vocal score and libretto published B. Mocatta & Co., [1891], both with English and Italian words: the libretto is in four acts while the published score is in three parts. Purchased from Lisa Cox, 1 Oct. 1996 (cat. 31, item 22).
