MS Mus. 249. Lyra-viol music; third quarter of the seventeenth century. Written in tablature by a single hand throughout on printed staves. There are eight staves of six lines each, the first seven printed by woodblock and the bottom stave made from pieces of type. The composers represented, most of whom are not identified in the volume, include John Jenkins, Theodore Steffkins, William Lawes, William Young, John Esto, De Londi and Nicolas Hotman. References below are to Gordon Dodd: Thematic index of music for viols (Viola da Gamba Society). Purchased at Sotheby’s, 1 Dec. 1995 (lot 186).
