MS Mus. 271. AARON COPLAND (b.1900, d.1990): ‘Letter from Home’, for orchestra; 1944. Dyeline copy of the autograph full score of the ‘original version for radio orchestra’, with annotations in red and blue crayon and pencil, partly or completely in the composer’s hand. The annotations include additions to the timpani part in bars 93-99. The work was commissioned by the American Broadcasting Company for Paul Whiteman, who conducted the first performance in New York on the Philco Radio Hour, 17 Oct. 1944. Copland made an arrangement for chamber orchestra in 1947, and revised the full orchestral version in 1962. This copy bears the stamp of the Boosey & Hawkes Hire Library. The revised version, which is slightly shorter than the original, was published by Boosey & Hawkes, [1964], after which the present score of the original version was withdrawn and returned to the composer. Purchased from Sotheby’s, 21 May 1999 (lot 69).
