MS Mus. 294. ‘A COLLECTION OF PSALM AND HYMN TUNES SUNG AT LONGDON CHURCH: collected by John Belton and Harry Allen’; circa 1835. An index of the tunes is written on the front flyleaf (f. i) and originally continued onto f. 1r, only a fragment of which now survives. Written in ink on a stave ruled with four lines, usually without words. ff. 1-38 (nos. 1-39 below) are in one hand. Unless stated otherwise, the tunes are written in four parts, with three treble clefs and one bass clef, the melody in the third part. The book includes several references to George L. Yate’s printed hymnal (without tunes), A Selection of Psalms and Hymns (Wellington, 1835). Composers’ names are not given in the manuscript, but have been supplied from N. Temperley, The Hymn Tune Index (Oxford, 1998). Presented by Prof. K. G. Pont, 9 April 1997, who acquired the volume from a dealer in Shropshire.
