Music manuscripts, correspondence and papers of the composer, pianist and teacher Alan Dudley Bush (b.1900, d.1995); 1924-91. Autograph unless stated otherwise. English, Czech, Dutch, French, German, Greek, Russian, Spanish, Turkish, Xhosa and Zulu. Most scores are not dated, and dates have been supplied either from related correspondence (where cited) or from the following sources: A. Poulton, ‘Bibliographica’, in Time Remembered: An 80th Birthday Symposium for Alan Bush, ed. R. Stevenson (Kidderminster, 1981), pp. 147-87; id., A Dictionary-Catalog of Modern British Composers (Westport, CT, 2000), I, pp. 425-56; N. Bush, Alan Bush: Music, Politics and Life (2000), pp. 146-64; and the web site of the Alan Bush Music Trust (www.alanbushtrust.org.uk). With the composer’s approval, Poulton (1981) assigned opus numbers to some unnumbered works and changed the numbers of some works with duplicate opus numbers. These adaptations have generally been retained in the subsequent published lists. In the present catalogue, the opus number as written on the score is given first, and opus numbers supplied from the published catalogues are given in brackets. Other autograph manuscripts of Bush’s compositions are held by the Royal Academy of Music (‘Festive March’, for organ, and ‘The Swallow Book’, for voice and piano, op.19 [with Alan Rawsthorne]), the BBC (‘Russian Glory’, for military band, op.20), the Britten-Pears Library, Aldeburgh (‘The Swallow Book’) and Nottingham County Council (Symphony no.2, op.33); see also Add. 52464 B, 59810, ff. 53-67, and 59809, ff. 9-11. Bequeathed by the composer and received by the Library at various dates between 10 Feb. 1996 and 10 July 2002. MSS Mus. 371, 372 purchased from Peter Moore, Esq., 5 Jan. 1999. Incorporated in 2003.
