A. Letters from the composer Federigo Fiorillo to the London music publishers Robert Birchall and Christopher Lonsdale, with a letter from the composer Tommaso Rovedino to the tenor John Braham; 1813-circa 1824, n.d. The Fiorillo letters relate to his arrangements for Birchall of selections from Mozart’s operas. The letter from Rovedino to Braham concerns a rehearsal of a Scena by Rovedino and mentions the singers Mrs Brand and Maria Caradori-Allan. Purchased from Mrs Averil Wilkinson, 18 May 2005.

B. Letters and postcards from the contralto Dame Clara Butt to her friend May Holloway née Thompson; 1898-1934. Many of the letters are written while she was on tour, from countries including Singapore, Denmark and Australia. One is written jointly with her husband, the baritone Kennerley Rumford. There are no letters from the period 1920-1929. With newspaper cuttings relating to Clara Butt’s funeral (ff. 68-72). Purchased from Lisa Cox, 18 April 2005.

C. Letters to the tenor Parry Jones from Eugene Goossens, Sir Hamilton and Lady Harty, Landon Ronald and Sir Henry and Lady Wood; 1939-1957, n.d. Partly typewritten. The letters from Sir Hamilton Harty concern Jones’s performances in works including the first English performances of Busoni’s Dr Faust and Hindemith’s Mathis der Maler; those from Sir Henry Wood include a reference to Jones’s involvement in the first performance of Vaughan Williams’s Serenade to Music, written to commemorate Wood’s fiftieth year as a conductor. Purchased at Sotheby’s, 17 December 2002, lot 63.

D. Letters from musicians and writers to the writer on music Rosa Newmarch; 1883-1940, n.d. Partly typewritten. Some in French. The correspondents include Henry T. Finck, writing about his biography of Grieg and his attempts to persuade Grieg to write his autobiography, Francesco Malipiero on his own compositions, Leone Sinigaglia on his researches into Piedmontese folksong, Sir Henry Wood inviting Newmarch to write programme notes for Promenade concerts (with Robert Newman and Sir Ernest Clarke involved in subsequent negotiations), Alfredo Casella, Sir Hubert Parry, S. Arthur Strong and others. Purchased at Sotheby’s, 22 May 2003, lot 116.
