MS Mus. 1120. Signature book presented to John Mewburn Levien; [1930]. J. M. Levien was Secretary of the Royal Philharmonic Society from 1918 to 1929, and this book was presented to him on his retirement from office by Sir Edward Elgar, together with a silver cigar box and a gold cigarette case, before the interval of the Society’s concert on 30 Jan. 1930. See the minutes of the Committee of Management (RPS MS 293, ff. 188-9, 191-2, 194, 226, 228), the concert programme (e.1401.) and the description in R. Elkin, Royal Philharmonic (1947), p. 115. The names of signatories are listed in the index; it appears that some of them may have been added later in the year (see f. 29). Transferred from the Norman McCann collection in the Royal Academy of Music, 6 July 2006.
