Title:

MS Mus. 1524. Songs by Henry Purcell, J. C. Pepusch and William Boyce: A selection of songs from ‘The Fairy Queen’, an excerpt from the cantata ‘Alexis’, ‘When Orpheus went down’, and some anonymous pieces; circa 1692-1745. Ink scores, copies. The manuscript consists of three gatherings and some loose leaves formerly bound in a larger volume; there are traces of glue and leather on the backs of the gatherings. Twelve-stave paper. ff. 7v, 8v-9r, 10v-12r and 13r are blank. Purchased at Sotheby’s, 20 May 2005, part of lot 129 (with MS Mus. 1177).

1. ff. 1-5v. Henry Purcell: Songs from The Fairy Queen, for soprano or tenor and continuo. f. 1 is a printed title page: Some of the Airy Songs which are sung in the Fairy Queen. Set to Musick, By Mr. Henry Purcell. London, Printed, and are to be Sold at most Musick-Shops in Town. 1692. The selection is the same, except for two omissions, as that published in 1692 in Some select songs as they are sung in the Fairy Queen... (RISM P 5876). At the beginning of some of the pieces is written the name of a singer; the names mentioned are Mrs Dyer, Mrs Butler, Mr Pate and Mrs Ayliff. The songs are:- (a) ‘Sing while we trip it’; - (b) ‘I am come to lock all fast’; - (c) ‘One charming night’; - (d) ‘If love’s a sweet passion’; - (e) ‘A thousand ways we’ll find’ (incomplete); - (f) ‘Thus the ever grateful spring’; - (g) ‘Here’s the summer sprightly gay’; - (h) ‘Thus happy and free’.

2. ff. 6-7r. Henry Purcell: ‘Since from my dear Astrea’s sight’, from The Prophetess, or, The history of Dioclesian (Z.627, Appendix 2), for soprano. Staves have been left blank for a continuo part. The autograph of this piece is Guildhall Library Gresham Ms. Safe 3.

3. f. 8r. Anon.: Piece in D major for treble instrument. Staves have been left blank for a continuo part.

4. ff. 9v-10r. Anon.: Fourteen short pieces for treble instrument. Various keys and time signatures, some cancellations, uncertain hand; possibly the work of a student.

5. f. 12v. Johann Christoph Pepusch: ‘See from the silent grove’; recit. and aria from the cantata Alexis, for soprano.

6. f. 13v. William Boyce: ‘When Orpheus went down to the regions below’, for soprano and continuo.
