MS Mus. 1563. Ode on the coming of age of the Earl de Grey: composed by William Spark (b. 1823, d. 1897), words by Frank Curzon; 1873. Vocal score, copy. For soprano, tenor and bass soloists, chorus and orchestra. Performed at the mansion house of Studley Royal, co. Yorkshire, on 31 Jan. 1873. Composed for Frederick Oliver Robinson, 4th Earl De Grey of Wrest, son of George Frederick Samuel Robinson, 3rd Earl De Grey of Wrest, 1st Marquess of Ripon. The six movements are as follows: ff. 2-6r. ‘Heir of the love we bore your Sire’; - ff. 7-10v. ‘The Song of the Spirits of the past’; - ff. 11-12v. ‘And if we change the strain awhile’; - ff. 13-16v. ‘The song of the Spirits of the present (Let the village bells all ringing)’; - ff. 17-18r. ‘The future steals upon our Eyes’; - ff. 19-25r. ‘The land is arising’. One folio has been removed between ff. 24 and 25, not affecting the music. Purchased from Travis and Emery, 29 March 2004.
