MS Mus. 1570. Jefte in Masfa: excerpts from the oratorio by François Hippolyte Barthélemon (b. 1741, d. 1808), for solo voices, chorus and piano, with words by Abbate Luigi Semplici; [circa 1827]. Proofs of the vocal score corrected by the composer’s daughter, Cecilia Maria Henslowe née Barthélemon. Text in Italian, annotations in English. Published as Selections from the oratorio of Jefte in Masfa by Clementi, Collard and Collard in 1827. The music was commissioned by Leopold I, Grand Duke of Tuscany, and first performed at the Teatro Cocomero in Florence, 1776. The contents are: f. 1v. ‘Overture’ (incomplete, opening only); - ff. 2v-16r. ‘Con Inni e cantici Iddio’; - ff. 17v-20r. ‘Dove Brami io volo’; - ff. 21v-44r. ‘Omnipotente Iddio’; - ff. 45v-52r. ‘Contro la gloria mia’ (Recit.: ‘Il destin mio piego’), arranged by Thomas Attwood; - ff. 53v-54r. ‘Ah, del Cielo la Giusta vendetta’ (full score); - ff. 55v-67r. ‘Finale: Sorgi, O figlia’, arranged by William Crotch. Some of the music is in two states. Performers mentioned are Madame [Giuditta] Pasta, Miss [Rosemond Mountain née] Wilkinson, Signor [Francesco] Roncaglia, Signor Biagino, Signora Maria Barthélemon. The date of the first performance is given wrongly as 1766 on ff. 21v and 22r, but correctly as 1776 on f. 1r. R.M.22.a.21. is an incomplete autograph full score.
