ORLANDE DE LASSUS, MICHELE VAROTTO AND OTHERS: (first) tenor parts of Magnificat settings; late 16th cent. Added in ink to the pages at the end of the printed tenor part of Orlande de Lassus, Magnificat Octo Tonorum, sex, quinque, et quatuor vocum (Noribergæ: In Officina Theodorici Gerlazeni, 1573). On f. iii, in a different hand of similar date, are written two quotations relating to music, the first apparently from a letter, headed ‘Ioannes Otto ad Ferdinandum regem Bohemiæ’ and beginning ‘Septem artes numerantur, quibus homines sapientes hunc honorem habuerunt, ut liberales appellarent’ and the second taken from ‘Iesus Syrach cap: 32’ (verses 5-8), beginning ‘Ne impedias Musicam, & ubi canitur, ne sermones fundas, aut importune disputes’. Purchased, 13 Mar. 1923.
ff. vi + 46. 151 x 200mm. Parchment binding on boards, quarter-bound in pigskin. The parchment is taken from a thirteenth-century two-column Bible manuscript; the front cover (f. i) contains part of Ezekiel chs. 8-9 and the back cover (f. vi) part of Jeremiah ch. 49. The leather is blind-stamped with a roll depicting medallions of ‘Martinus Lut[herus]’, ‘Iohannes Hu[ss]’, ‘Erasmus Rod[erodami]’ and ‘Philipus Mel[anchthon]’; the roll measures 192 x 18mm and is apparently that listed in K. Haebler, Rollen- und Plattenstempel des XVI. Jahrhunderts (Leipzig, 1928-9), vol. 2, p. 335 as being probably the work of the binder Erhard Pilgrum of Nuremberg.
