VERSIFIED PSALM TUNES; 1710-1762. A composite volume of psalm tunes and other material. There are several marks of ownership, from which it appears that the two main components of the book, the printed collection of Psalm tunes for St Laurence Church, Reading (ff. 7-48) and the manuscript collection from Portsmouth Chapel (ff. 49-138), were separately owned until 1748-50, when they were brought together and added to. Inscribed ‘Thomas Collens His Book 1750’ (f. 1v, also f. 3 without date and f. 137v dated 13 Mar. 1757), ‘Robeart Day His Book 1728’ (f. 7v) ‘John Passingham His Book 1738’ (f. 48, also f. 20 without date), ‘Richard Collens’s Book The Gift of his [...] Collens Febru[ary ...] (f. 136v: part of leaf missing; dated 1762 in another hand on the same folio) and ‘Jonathan Spencer His Book February the 14th 1748’ (f. 138). Purchased, May 1976.

3. ff. 3v-6v. ‘The Preface to all Lovers of Divine Musick’, by William Tans’ur, copied in another hand from the first or second edition of his A Compleat Melody; or, the Harmony of Sion (James Hodges, [1734], [1735]), but with the date changed from 29 Sept. 1734 to 29 Sept. 1748.
4. ff. 7-48. John Bishop, A Set of new Psalm Tunes, in four parts ... With four short anthems in four parts ... Designed for the use of St. Laurence Church in Reading, etc. (Printed by W. Pearson, for the author, and sold by J. Walsh, etc, [1710]).
5. ff. 49v-50. ‘The A-fa-ut or Base Cliff with the Letters of the Gammut.’
6. ff. 52v-63. Psalm and hymn tunes, in several hands.
