THREE SONGS; circa 1745. Written on blank pages of the printed book The Universal Musician: or, Songster’s Delight, vol. 1 (William Lloyd, 1738). The songs added in manuscript, written on the third, fifth and seventh folios, without words and intended for instrumental performance, are entitled ‘The charms of lovely Peggy’, ‘The generous distrust’ and ‘Air in Cato’. Front flyleaf inscribed ‘Mr John Marshall his Book 1743’, also ‘February 1742’ and ‘1745’. Purchased, Jan. 1948.
