PETER SIMM HIS SINGING BOOK: anthems by Broderip, Greene and Handel; after 1759. Anthems setting psalm texts, bound with John Broderip, A new set of Anthems and Psalm Tunes (London: A. Simpson, circa 1750). Inscribed ‘Peter Simm His Singing Book 1762’ and ‘the Lord is only my support. Steal not this book for fear of shame, For here you see the Owner’s Name: Peter Simm, price 2S 6– at second hand 1759’ (f. i) with a similar inscription, dated 1763, on f. 1v. The anthems are all written by the same hand, presumably Simm’s. Purchased, March 1983.

1. ff. 1-6. ‘Anthem Psm 57th Brodrip’, beginning ‘Awake up my glory, awake, lute and harp’.
2. ff. 6v-15v. ‘An Anthem for 4 voices Psms 55th 119th 35th 44th 20th & 125th. Dr Green’, beginning ‘Hear my pray’r, O God’.
3. ff. 16-17. ‘Handels 4th Coronation Anthem, Psalm 21st’, beginning ‘The King shall rejoice’. Part of the first section only, with 7 blank folios left for its intended completion.
4. ff. 18-21. ‘A full Anthem for 5 voices Psm 47th. Dr. Green’, beginning ‘O clap your hands together, all ye people’.
5. ff. 21v-29. ‘An Anthem for 2 Voices Psm 107, cpr. Dr. Green’, beginning ‘O Give thanks unto the Lord’.
