JOSEPH WOELFL: collections of music; 1806-1807. Two manuscript collections with printed title-pages, issued by subscription as publications. The title pages read First [Second] Number of Schirmer's Choice Manuscript Collection of Music: Containing the Most Celebrated Compositions of the First Masters on the Continent, Arranged and Partly Originally Composed for the Piano Forte, or the Harp, by Mr J. Woelfl. Published in London in 1806-7 by Mr Schirmer, formerly proprietor and manager of the German Theatre in London. In a copyist’s hand, with clefs for the piano parts and English translations of some vocal texts added later in red ink by the same hand. With a prospectus for the planned series of publications (f. ii). Some bibliographical notes added in pencil by a modern hand. Purchased, Oct. 1971.

2. ff. 5v-8. ‘Overture from the Opera, called The Swiss (Die Schweitzer), The Music by Gavoux’ (sc. ‘L’Amour filial’ by Pierre Gaveaux), arranged for piano.
3. ff. 8v-12. ‘Song from the Opera, called Don Jouan, The Music by Mozart’ (sc. ‘Finch’ han dal vino’ from ‘Don Giovanni’, K.527), arranged for bass and piano as ‘Oeffnet die Keller!’.
4. ff. 12v-16v. ‘Song from the Opera Adolf and Clara, or as it is called in the English Farce Matrimony. The Music by Dalayrac’: ‘Ah! jeunes Filles qu’on marie’, arranged for soprano and piano as ‘Ah! Junge Mädchen, die ihr freyet’.
5. ff. 17-18v. ‘Song from the Opera, called The Sleeping-cup. (Der Schlaftrunk.) The Music by Schmidt’: ‘Liebe, Freundschaft, Kuss und Wein’, arranged for soprano and piano.
6. ff. 19-24. ‘Song from the Opera, called The interrupted Sacrifice. (Das unterbrochene Opferfest.) The Music by Winter’: ‘Man rückt in grösster Eile’, arranged from the bass aria for soprano or tenor, violin and piano.
