CHARLES HENRY PURDAY: ‘The Old English Gentleman’; 1833-75, n.d. A collection of 26 printed editions of this song, including pirated editions, parodies and related pieces, with annotations, letters and newspaper cuttings, compiled and written by Purday. The manuscript portions of the volume include:— a list of contents (f. 1v); – ‘Some account of the Origin and Trial of the Old English Gentleman’, dated 11 Jan. 1875 (ff. 2, 7, 10-13); – and ‘La Scala di Grado: on which was founded the first part of the air’ (f. 16). For further information on the trial, see Henry Phillips, Musical and Personal Recollections (2 vols.; Charles J. Skeet, 1864), vol. 1, pp. 197-212. Purchased, April 1876.
