Ferdinand Ries: Sinfonia No. I, for strings, woodwinds, 2 horns, 2 trumpets, trombone and timpani, in D major, op. 23; [between 1809-circa 1812]. Full score in ink, copy, with 24 printed parts. The symphony was composed in 1809 and the parts were published circa 1812 (Bonn: Simrock). Performed at the Philharmonic Society Concerts, London, 18 Apr. 1814. In the same hand as a symphony by Krommer placed at h. 2799.h. Both score and parts bear the stamps of ‘Musis Sacrum’ (cancelled) and ‘Maatschappij voor Toonkunst Orkestafdeeling, Leiden.’ There is no printed trombone part. The trombone’s music is written in brown ink in the score and shares the ‘basso’ stave. The title is written on a printed decorative label pasted on to the front board. The autograph full score is in the Moldenhauer Archive of Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois. Purchased, together with h.2789.d. and h.2789.e., from G. N. Landre, antiquarian bookseller, Amsterdam, 30 Nov. 1997.
