RALPH VAUGHAN WILLIAMS: conductor’s annotations to Bach’s cantatas; circa 1925. The annotations are made in pencil on five volumes of the Bach-Gesellschaft edition (Leipzig: Breitkopf & Härtel, [1853-1881]), and apply to cantatas nos. 6, 11, 34, 80, 134 and 140. The orchestration of the cantata no.34 (‘O ewiges Feuer’) is expanded to include horns, timpani, clarinets, flutes, bassoons and timpani, and the upper part of each page is covered by a revised score in a copyist’s hand. Vaughan Williams has added a ‘Prelude’ to the canata no.140 (‘Ein Feste Burg’), consisting of a statement of the first two lines of the chorale by trombones in unison. The first two volumes bear the bookplate of M. Costa. A similarly-annotated score of the cantata no.50 (‘Nach dir, Herr, verlanget mich’) is at H.911.w. Purchased from Richard Macnutt, 15 June 1994.
Five volumes. 360 x 265mm.
