NICOLA MATTEIS: the second treble of ‘Ayrs for the Violin’, parts 1 and 2; circa 1690. Matteis’ Ayrs for the Violin were first published (parts 1 and 2, [1676?], and parts 3 and 4, 1685) in obl. 4o editions for solo violin and basso continuo. An expanded reissue of the third and fourth parts (also dated 1685) mentions the addition of a second treble, and a printed second treble for parts 3 and 4, also placed at this pressmark, was published in 1687. This manuscript provides a corresponding second treble to accompany parts 1 and 2. In 1702 or 1703, parts 1 and 2 were reissued in obl. fol. format, the title page stating that ‘The Second Treble never being Printed before is now Engraven from the Authors own Manuscript which renders the whole work Compleat’. This manuscript copy differs at several points from the published edition, often giving more ornate versions of the second treble part than was published. A bass part has been added in pencil to f. 1. Purchased, Mar. 1970.
ff. iii+55 + pp. [iv]+‘122’(i.e. 64, falsely numbered to concur with the first violin and basso volume), [i]+‘92’(i.e. 56). 109 x 225mm.
