Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: ‘God is our Refuge’, K. 20; 1765. Partly autograph and partly in the hand of Leopold Mozart.
- Scope & Content:
-
A short setting (1 page) of the words ‘God is our Refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble’, from Psalm xlvi, for four voices, in score. With the heading ‘Chorus by Mr Wolfgang Mozart, 1765.’ Written at the age of nine years for, and presented to, the British Museum on the occasion of his visit in July, 1765. Bound with two printed editions of Sonates pour le Clavecin, op.1 and 2, K6-9 (Paris: aux adresses ordinaires, 1764), presented on the same occasion. A note in Vincent Novello’s hand, pasted onto the final page of K.10.a.17.(2.), states that ‘The above extremely curious and interesting Composition is in Mozart’s own hand-writing. The circumstance of his having written it for the express purpose of presenting it to the British Museum at the time that he visited England, when he was about 7 [sic] years old, is recorded in his Life by Nissen. Vide Page 79.’
