Richard Maitland, 4th Earl of Lauderdale. Translation of Virgils' Aeneid into English heroic couplets; after 26 June 1693.
Fair copy, with apparently autograph revisions. A note at the end of Book VI reads '300 errors corrected in this book since written by Mr. Dalton'. A partial version of this translation, with interlinear revisions corresponding to those in the present manuscript, is now Add MS 27346.
Paper. Quarto. Circa June 1693-1695. Jottings on the front flyleaf include:-
1. Signature 'Lauderdale';
2. Statement that 'The seventh book which is the last of the twelve I have translated I ended at St Germans the 26 of June NS 1693;
3. Some verses of 'Mr Dick at Mr Thomases the queens Cook in the Rue de Pontoise', beg. 'Had I the wit, had I the eyes';
4. Copies of epigrams in French on the death (28 Dec. 1694) of Queen Mary II;
5. Note of presentation to 'Patrick Lattin from Col: Dromgold Paris 1780'. On the verso of the final flyleaf occur some Scots verses beg. 'As I gede down Langside I hard I wat na what'.
