Title:

SHAW SPARROW PAPERS. Correspondence and papers of Walter Shaw Sparrow (b. 1862, d. 1940), author and art critic, mainly relating to his defence of the Fifth Army and its commander, Sir Hubert Gough, for the retreat in France during March 1918. His writings on the subject were:-(a) 'The Epic of Our V Army' (48207, ff. 1-224) written, 1918-1919, with financial support from Frederick Scott Oliver, but withheld from publication at the latter's wish (see 48203, f. 92);-(b) Articles in The Nineteenth Century, lxxxvi, 1919, pp. 971-986, 1026-1041, lxxxviii, 1920, pp. 356-366, The National Review, lxxv, 1920, pp. 234-259, and The English Review, xxxiii, 1921, pp. 15-21;-(c) The Fifth Army in March 1918, 1921. The present collection includes letters from army officers and others in support of his views, material provided by them for his publications, his own literary manuscripts and notes, etc., and letters of criticism written after the first edition of his published work on the Fifth Army, many of which are summarised or quoted in the preface of the third edition (1923). Names of writers are given in the Index to the present Catalogue. Six volumes. Various sizes. Circ. 1911-1939. Presented, together with printed material now transferred to the Department of Printed Books, by Miss Beatrice Ferrar, sister-in-law of W. Shaw Sparrow, in accordance with the expressed wish of his widow.
