THEOLOGICAL AND CANONICAL MISCELLANY, compiled probably by a priest of the diocese of London, mid 13th cent.; see the description of this manuscript in C. R. Cheney, English Synodalia of the Thirteenth Century, 1941, p. 80. Latin. Imperfect, by mutilation of many leaves. The principal extant contents are:-
(1) Excerpts from canon law. ff. 1, 1b.
(2) A treatise on the threefold nature of the universe, lacking the beginning and end; beg. 'Quatenus legimus ihesum deposuisse vestimenta sua',.ends 'Iugum verecundie in contu-'. ff. 10-12b.
(3) Selected canons of the Council of Oxford, 1222, viz., cc.37 (from 'Decrevimus ne clerici beneficiati' to the end), 43-47 and 60, according to the numeration of F. M. Powicke and C. R. Cheney, Councils and Synods ... relating to the English Church, ii, 1964, pp. 100-125. The present text has minor variants other than those noted by Powicke and Cheney. f. 15.
(4) 'Prima statuta venerabilis patris domini F. London' episcopi': the unique text of the first statutes of Fulk Bassett, Bishop of London, compiled 1245-1259. Printed in Powicke and Cheney, ibid., pp. 630-632. f. 15.
(5) 'Synodus London' sub venerabili patre domino Fulcone episcopo consecrationis eiusdem anno . . .': synodal statutes of Bishop Fulk Bassett for the diocese of London, compiled 1245-1259. Imperfect through the loss of two leaves after f. 17. Contains cc. 1-41, end of 86-107, see Powicke and Cheney, ibid., pp. 632-656, where the present text is collated with other MSS., and also Cheney, English Synodalia, pp. 79-84. 14th cent. notes (excerpts from canon law) on ff. 19, 19b. ff. 15b-19.
(6) Part of a treatise on confession, lacking the end, beg. 'Confessio donum est spiritus sancti', ends 'sine iactantia, sine presumptione, sine defensione'. ff. 20-23b.
(7) Miscellaneous notes for pastoral guidance on almsgiving, baptism, wills, penance, matrimony, original sin, etc. ff. 25-32b.
(8) Miscellaneous notes on canon law (f. 40), Psalms 1-4 (ff. 41, 41b), the Ten Commandments, Seven Deadly Sins, etc. (f. 43). ff. 40-43.
(9) Alphabetical glossary of theological, etc., terms, wanting B-N. ff. 43b-64. Vellum; ff. i+64. 160 mm. × 115 mm. Mid xIII cent. Gatherings, i8, lacks 2- 8; ii10, lacks 1-3, 7-9 (?); iii8, lacks 3-6; iv8, lacks 5; V8, lacks 1, 2, 7, 8; vi missing and vii indeterminate through mutilation; viii8, lacks 1, 2, 7, 8; ix10, lacks 1-3; x8 . Written in at least two 13th cent. hands, with 14th cent. additions. Some red initials and rubrication. Contemporary white skin binding. Item 214 in the Church Congress Exhibition, 1925 (see f. i). Belonged to Canon Cecil Deedes, Prebendary of Chichester (d. 1920), and to Hugh Maudslay Hordern, Bishop of Lewes (d. 1946).
