THE MEDICI PAPERS,
LETTERS AND PAPERS OF THE GIULIANO DI GIOVENCO BRANCH OF THE MEDICI FAMILY; 13th-18th centt. Mostly Italian and Latin. They relate principally to Raffaello de' Medici, senior (d. 1555), and his descendants, among whom the most notable are his grandson Raffaello, Balì of Florence (d. 1628), and the children of the latter, Averardo, Giovanni, Marchese di S. Angelo, Giuliano, Archbishop of Pisa, Giulio, Lorenzo, Marchese della Castellina, and Pietro, all of whom played active roles in the political and military life of the Tuscan state. The papers formed part of the family archives of the Marchesi Cosimo and Averardo de' Medici offered for sale in London in 1918 (Christie, Manson and Woods's sale-cat., 4-7 Feb. 1918); see English Historical Review,, xxxviii, 1918, pp. 10-20; and finally sold there by the same auctioneers 26-28 May 1919 after the withdrawal of some of the material by the Italian Government (a copy of the sale-cat. is in Add. 48799); see Gli Archivi Italiani, an. VI, 1919, pp. 77-108. The present collection consists of the 118 lots purchased by Sir Henry Solomon Wellcome (d. 1936). Lots 77-310, 491-568 were bought by Gordon Selfridge and subsequently deposited on loan at the Harvard School of Business Administration (see G. R. B. Richards, Florentine Merchants in the age of the Medici, Harvard, 1932). Thirty-four lots were bought by the John Rylands Library at Manchester (see Bulletin of the John Rylands Library, viii, 1924, pp. 282- 297). See also Brit. Mus. Quart., xx, 1955-1956, pp. 28-29. The volumes are arranged according to the classification of the archivist (Giuseppe Fagiuoli?) who catalogued the papers in the late 18th cent. (pressmarks on spine). Lots 321-489 passim (original letters) have as far as possible been restored to their original order; lots 448, 449 and 481 (military MSS.) form Add. 48769; lots 28, 606, 608 and 609 are preserved as Add. Ch. 75328- 75400; lot 488 (printed material) has been transferred to the Department of Printed Books; the lot numbers of the other MSS. are quoted in the description below. Each volume is prefaced by a full table of contents compiled in Italian by the archivist referred to above, with references to other relevant documents not contained in the present collection, except for the letters and miscellaneous papers (48769-48776, 48795-48798) which are fully indexed in the present Catalogue. Some of the original volumes are now divided into two or more parts with a continuous foliation throughout (see below). Presented by the Wellcome Foundation.
