HENRY SALT: papers from the collections of Henry Salt, F.R.S. (d.1827), Consul-General in Egypt 1815-1827; 1817-1821, n.d. Partly autograph. Partly Italian. Salt was active in archaeological exploration and the collection of antiquities. For a detailed account of Salt's career, see J. J. Halls, The Life and Correspondence of Henry Salt, 2 vols. (1834). Presented by Mrs Elizabeth Kathleen Mackenzie Holt, 17 June 1967 (see departmental correspondence).

1. ff. 1-45v. Report of Captain [J?] B. Caviglia to Salt on excavations at the Pyramids and Sphinx, with related papers; 1817-circa 1818. Chiefly Italian. Caviglia was working at the Pyramids from Jan.-June 1817. Included are: (a) Caviglia's original report; 1817. Autograph. ff. 2-22v;- (b) duplicate of (a) above; 1817-1818. Contemporary copy. ff. 23-38v;- (c) List of plates and sketches accompanying memoirs of the Pyramids and Sphinx; circa 1818. Salt's autograph. ff. 39-40;- (d) 'Estratto dell' Corriére dell' Mokattam', relating to excavations at the Pyramids; 29 April 1818. Italian. ff. 41-45v.

2. ff. 46-76. Journal of an Englishman? who travelled to Sennar with Ismael Pasha's expedition to subdue the Eastern Sudan; 26 Aug. 1820-23 Aug. 1821. Copy, partly in Salt's autograph. The writer travelled by boat from Aswan to Shendi, and overland to Sennar, returning by boat to Berber, then overland to Aswan. He may have acted as an agent for Salt, as he marked various antiquities with Salt's name (ff. 61v, 64v, 66).

3. ff. 77-91v. Discourse on the Maina, i.e. the Morea in the Peloponnese, by Dr Giuseppe Migone; bef. 1827. Autograph? Italian. Probably intended for publication.
