GESSI PAPERS: correspondence and papers of and concerning Romolo Gessi, his family and associates; circa 1878-1931. Some copies, typewritten and printed material. English, French, German, Italian, Arabic and Turkish. Gessi (d.1881) was Governor of Bahr el-Ghazal and the Equatorial Provinces in the Sudan under the Governor-Generalship of General Charles George Gordon and subsequently of Raouf Pasha. The papers chiefly concern Gessi's operations in 1878-1880, particularly against Suleiman Zebhyr. For Gessi's journal for this period see Seven Years in the Soudan, ed. F. After Gessi's death, the papers were in the posession of Tito Figari, Gessi's executor, a Cairo lawyer. Purchased from Baron Cesare Augusto Torella di Romagnano of Genoa, great-nephew of Tito Figari,
