SERMONS OF ANTIM IVIREANUL: twenty-seven sermons of Antim Ivireanul, Metropolitan of Ugro-Wallachia (d.1716), possibly the author's own copy; 1712-1716. Romanian. The earliest sermon is the Metropolitan's inaugural sermon of 1705 and the latest is dated 13 Jan. 1712 (ff. 186v-196). The sermons are printed from MSS. in Rumania in Antim Ivireanul. Predici, ed. The manuscript contains the following inscriptions in Greek: (a) note of possession of Anthimos the Archpriest, with a possible press mark, and miscellaneous notes; early 18th cent. f. iv;- (b) ex libris of Euripos Anthimos, priest, followed by a signature of the same, early 18th cent. f. v verso;- (c) miscellaneous notes; 18th? cent. f. vi verso. The following numbers occur, possibly previous catalogue or press marks: '592', 18th-early 19th cent. f. i; '6' in ink, 18th cent. f. iv; '61' in pencil. f. iv; '5', 18th cent. f. vi verso. Bookplates (ff. ii, viii) of John Gordon of Buthlaw, professor of Civil Law at Edinburgh (d.1775). Possibly acquired by John Gordon or his grandson Thomas Gordon (d.1841), major-general in the Greek army. The MS. is not listed in catalogues of the library at Cairness, the family seat in Lonmay, Aberdeenshire, dated 1797, 1815 and 1848, nor in the sale catalogue of General Thomas Gordon's library, Sotheby's, 16 March 1850. Owned by Edwin Hanson Freshfield (b.1864, d.1948), whose bookplate appears (f. iii) with 'No 6', altered from '5'. Sold at Freshfield's sale at Sotheby's, 14 July 1949, lot 299. See Sotheby's sale-cat. 11 Dec. 1968, lot 209. Purchased 11 Jan. 1969.
Paper; ff. viii+328. 160 x 107mm. Modified Cyrillic script. Headings and capitals in red. Gilt fore-edges, goffered. Contemporary Rumanian binding in dark red morocco. Spine blind-tooled. Front cover gilt-stamped: the Presentation in the Temple. Back cover blind-stamped with a little gilding: Christ enthroned. Binding: 165 x 115mm. Four green silk ties.
