ELIZABETH SCOTT: hymns and poems; bef. 1758. Copies, 1758. 'Poems on Several Occasions by Miss Elizabeth Scott Copied A.D. 1758', with a poem by Miss [Elizabeth] Carter 'on her Birth-Day' (title-page, f. 1). A collection of hymns by Elizabeth Scott of Norwich (b.1708? d.1776). Elizabeth Scott married in 1751 (see Add. 49197) Elisha Williams, and afterwards the Hon. William Smith of New York. See J. Julian, A Dictionary of Hymnology (1892), p. 1019: the present MS. is not among those listed there, although it may be related to Julian's item iv. See also Add. 49197, ff. 42-59v. Owned, after 1892, by Dr John Julian, whose signature occurs on f. 1. Presented by Dr Julian to Church House, Dean's Yard, Westminster, in 1908, see the inscribed Church House bookplate (f. i). The hymnological collection at Church House was presented to the British Museum in 1949: see Add. 50888-50900. Transferred from the Department of Printed Books, June 1969.

2. ff. 1v-2v. Dedicatory letter to the author's father.
3. ff. 3-59, 67-67v. Sixty-three hymns and poems by Elizabeth Scott, numbered with roman numerals. Hymn XLIII was omitted and is inserted at f. 67. The three poems are at ff. 46, 56 and 57v.
4. ff. 60-62. 'In Diem Natalem' by Elizabeth Carter (d.1806). Beg. 'Thou Power supream by whose command I live'. See First-Line Index of English Poetry 1500-1800 in Manuscripts of the Bodleian Library Oxford, ed.
M. Crum (1969), no. 2236. Titled 'Miss Carters' Poem on her Birth-day'. The copyist adds the note 'N.B. Miss Carters' Birthday was on Dec. 5.'
