GEOMETRY AND ENGINEERING: treatises on plane geometry, mechanics and artillery, etc.; late 17th-early 18th cent. Italian. Plentifully illustrated with drawings in pen and ink, and watercolour. Old number '155', Italian, 18th cent., f. 1. Paper slip in Italian, giving brief title, description, a shelf mark 'Lib. 1, scaf. 1' and the number '17', 19th cent., f. v. For a similar slip in a MS. of the same provenance, see Add. 36880, f. ii. Possibly from the collection of Matteo Luigi Canonici (d.1805). Owned by the Rev. Walter Sneyd (d.1888), who purchased over 900 Canonici MSS.: Sneyd's bookplate occurs, f. iv, inside the front cover. Lot 617 in Sneyd's sale-cat., Sotheby's, 18 Dec. 1904. The following numbers occur in pencil: '2.3.04', ff. 2, 130v; '201', f. 133; '30395', f. 1. Owned by the Patent Office Library, whose bookstamp occurs throughout. Patent Office cataloguing slip, f. vii. Patent Office labels, '**' on front cover (f. iii), on spine 'FB', '35', ff. i, ii. Transferred from the Department of Printed Books, 15 Oct. 1969.
Paper; ff. vii+133+15*+25*+74(a)-(b). 207 x 142mm. One Italian cursive hand throughout. Contemporary limp vellum binding. End-papers with floral design in red and gold, contemporary. Titled and dated 1700 on spine by the Patent Office Library.
