MAP OF AN ESTATE IN FARNBOROUGH: 'The mapp of an estate in the parrish of Farmbrough and county of Kent belonging to Mr Richard Cooper, gent.: measured and mapped by James Chadwick of Liverpoole Lancashire 20th May 1725'; 1725. Scale 1" = 6 rods (= 33 yards). Roads coloured yellow ochre, edged with blue and red; field boundaries edged with dark green. A crude compass rose indicates North at approximately 60 degrees right of top centre. With table of field names and acreages. The field boundaries correspond to those shown in the surveyor's drawing, dated 1798, for the 1-inch Ordnance Survey (BL Map Library OSD 98) but had disappeared by 1869 (see Ordnance Survey
25-inch survey of Kent, 1st edn., sheet xvi.10). Other maps by James Chadwick are a plan of Liverpool (of which two engraved copies are in Liverpool Record Office) and a map of lands in Downe and Cudham, co. Kent (Centre for Kentish Studies, Geary MSS U.31, P.1), both dated 1725. See also H. M. T. Cobbe, 'Four manuscript maps recently acquired by the British Museum', Journal of the Society of Archivists, iv (1973), pp. 646-652. Possibly from the papers of the Barons Gwydir, see Add. 56066. Purchased from Maggs, 20 Sept. 1969.
