GAWDY DIARY: parliamentary diary of Framlingham Gawdy, M.P. for Thetford; 6-30 Nov. 1640. Autograph. Pencil. Perhaps part of a series of diaries by Gawdy of Commons proceedings during the Long Parliament. Other volumes are Add. 14828 (22 Feb.-2 July 1641) and Add. 14827(14 Jan.-28 July 1642). All three volumes are listed in R. C. Johnson, 'Parliamentary Diaries of the Early Stuart Period', Bulletin of the Institute of Historical Research, xliv (1971),
pp. 298-299. The present MS. was not known to W. Notestein, who used Add. 14828 in his edition of The Journal of Sir Simonds D'Ewes (1923), which covers the period 3 Nov. 1640-20 March 1641. Apparently owned, like Add. 14827-14828, by Peter Le Neve, the antiquary: see the hand of the titling on the front cover. Numbered 87/4 in a 17th cent. hand on the front cover: Add. 14828 bears an identical number. Phillipps MS. 20751. Purchased from Thomas Lawrence of Crewkerne, 13 Dec. 1969, see sale-cat. 23 Oct. 1969, lot 272.
Paper; ff. i+64. 128 x 78mm. Contemporary limp vellum wrap-around cover, string fastening. Titled on spine and front cover, probably by Peter Le Neve.
