THE SACRIFICE OF ISAAC: an illustration in coloured outline drawing probably cut from a copy of the chronicle of Peter of Poitiers (Petrus Pictaviensis, Chancellor of Paris), Compendium in genealogia Christi; early 13th cent. Probably executed in England. Latin. The illustration is set within a roundel and is executed in red and black inks. On the verso is a biblical genealogical tree in red, yellow and green. This suggests that the fragment was taken from a codex rather than a roll. Other early examples of the Compendium in both codicological forms occur in Cotton Faust. B.vii, Cambridge, Corpus Christi College 83, and Cleveland, Museum of Art, CMA 73.5; a later example of the same subject may be found in Royal 14 B.ix. See N. J. Morgan, Early Gothic Manuscripts (1982-1988), I no. 43 and II no. 177. Presented through the Friends of the National Libraries by Mrs Constance Kyrle Fletcher, 6 Feb. 1980.
Vellum; f. 1. 97 x 97mm. Script is a Gothic textualis rotunda.
