Imperfect, lacking several leaves at the end of the volume. ff. 85-131 have been misbound and should come after f. 151. Ex-libris and signature of John Rider, ff. 113, 115, 140, 155v. Purchased at Christie's, 30 Jan. 1980, lot 102.
Paper; ff. iii+194. 197 x 160mm. Contemporary binding of limp vellum, inscribed in ink on the spine 'EMP. CHARLES V INSTUCTIONS (sic) TO HIS SON, &c MSS'. Two thongs missing.
1. ff. 1-44. Emperor Charles V's instructions to his son, the future Philip II, on his abdication in 1556. Fair copy. According to a preface addressed to Queen Elizabeth, which is omitted here, but found in Harley 836 and 1506, Kings 166, Stowe 95 and 161, this work is a translation from the Spanish by Lord Henry Howard, later (1604) Earl of Northampton. Whereas the existence of a Spanish original is doubted, the preface in Kings 166 is signed by Lord Henry Howard and the whole work generally accepted as his. Another copy lacking the preface is Sloane 1432.
