LITERARY COMMONPLACE-BOOK in several hands; circa 1783. Partly printed. Included in the original core of the book, now ff. 66-166, 172, are
(ff. 89-93v, 96-97) verses by William Hayley and Anna Seward mostly relating
to her visit to Eartham, co. Suss., in August 1782, and verses by (ff. 67-69v) Oliver Goldsmith, (ff. 70-71v, 80-85) Rev. T. Penrose, (ff. 73v-75v) William Shenstone, (ff. 94-95v, 157) William Mason, (ff. 107v-110v) John Pomfret, and (ff. 168-168v) Thomas Chatterton. Also included are prose and poetical extracts from Beattie, Boswell, Chesterfield, Dryden, Fielding, Johnson, La Bruyere, Milton, Rousseau, Warburton and Warton. Foremost among several insertions at the beginning of the volume are (ff. 39-54) copies of verses by Anna Seward composed in 1768-1779. Other insertions contain verses by (ff. 14-15) William Collins, (ff. 17-17v) Samuel Bishop, (ff. 18-27v, 36-38v) John Gay and (ff. 55-56) Thomas Gray, and (ff. 12-14, 57-62) two declamations by Roger Mainwaring Ellerker, of Trinity College, Cambridge. Near the end of the volume is (ff. 164v-166v) a description of a pageant organised in 1783 by Sir Brooke Boothby, 7th Bart., for the painter Henry Fuseli, including verses by Miss [Elizabeth] Ryves. Armorial bookplate with engraved inscription 'E Libris Jos. Coltman' [?Rector of Beverley, 1803-1813] and manuscript pressmark 'Sd.3', f. i. Purchased of Richard Hatchwell, 8 Aug. 1980.
