CLENT, CO. WORC.: estate map entitled 'A Map of the Manour of Church Clent Containing a Description of all the Lands belonging to the Capital Messuage or Manor House at Caldecut Hill in the Parish of Clent in the County of Stafford being the Lands of Samuel Barton D.D. and Prebendary of St Peters Westminster Lord of the Manour. As also of the Copy-hold Lands adjoyning or lying within the Manour aforesaid belonging to the severall Persons whose Names are inserted within their respective Lands and who hold as Tenants under the said Dr. Barton according to the Custom of the said Manour. Surveyed in September 1704'; 1704. In the upper right corner a note dated 1708 which relates to the accuracy of the survey states that 'Wm Ede . . . drew ye Map'. Scale: 100 perches to 8 inches (approx. 1:2475). The map shows Calcothill Farm and the detached parts of the manor in or near Holy Cross and Clent, which until 1844 formed part of Staffordshire, included on OS County Series Worcester 1:2500 sheet numbers IX 7, 10, 11, 12. Compass rose, three information panels in elaborate borders reminiscent of early 18th century picture or mirror frames. Also included are lists of tenants and acreage, partly in the form of a pillar and a scale bar surmounted by dividers. North at the top. Hedges, lanes, ponds, buildings and gates shown and land use and acreage given. Some pencil annotations in a 19th cent. hand. Yellow and pink lines appear to indicate responsibility for maintaining borders. Topographical views of St Leonard's Church, Clent, Clent Hall al. Clent House ('Mr. Benj. Tristram's House') and Calcothill Farmhouse ('Manor House'). Purchased at Sotheby's, 27 Oct. 1980, lot 177.
Ink and coloured washes on parchment. 750 x 660mm. Prickmarks. Tears on the lower edge possibly caused by removal from binding.
