THE BOTTETOURT PSALTER; first quarter of 13th cent. Latin. Saints relating to the diocese of Winchester are prominent in the calendar and litany, including Ethelwold, Swithun and Birinus. Produced in Southern England, probably in the diocese of Winchester. The latest datable feast in the calendar is that of Thomas Becket (canonised 1173). The calendar includes obits of the 13th and 14th cent. of members of the Bottetourt family: for example, Henry Bottetourt (23 Nov. 1291); Alice (20 Oct.) and Matilda (20 Nov.), daughters of John Bottetourt, 2nd Baron (member of Parliament, 1342-1385), see Sir B. Burke's Extinct Peerages (1846), pp. 71-73. Pen-trials by Simon Grieg, f. 88 (late 16th cent.?). See Sotheby's sale-cat., 24 June 1980 (lot 71). Purchased of Alan G. Thomas, Nov. 1980.
Vellum; ff. ii + 121. Sec. fol.: 'tercia septembris'. 135 x 95mm. Modern paper endpapers (3) to both front and back. Gatherings (15) of 8, except i6, xv10, and apparently lacks 3 leaves after f. 2, single leaves after ff. 3, 22 and 35, 2 leaves after f. 46, 1 leaf after f. 57, 2 leaves after f. 65, 3 leaves after f. 68, single leaves after ff. 82 and 83, 5 leaves after f. 92, 2 leaves after f. 95, 4 leaves after f. 100, single leaves after ff. 101 and 110, and probably 2 leaves at the end. Ruled (double bounding-lines) in hard-point for single columns of 21 lines. Text is above top line. Written space 88 x 60mm. Script is a Gothic textualis semi-quadrata by one hand. Modern vellum binding.
Contents:
1. ff. 1-3v. Calendar (imperf.).
2. ff. 4-113. Psalms (beg. imperf.).
3. ff. 113-119. Canticles.
4. ff. 119-121v. Litany (ends imperf.).
The decoration consists of gilded KL monograms to the calendar, pen-flourished versal initials in red and blue (alternating in use for the body and the flourishing) and litterae notabiliores. Major initials have been excised (see, for example, offsets and traces of pricking for transfer on ff. 23 and 36).
