CARTULARY OF NORTH CREAKE ABBEY, CO. NORF.; early 14th cent., with 15th cent. additions. Latin. Containing copies of private deeds and some grants by the Augustinian abbey of North Creake, arranged topographically: Creake, South Creake (ff. 14-29v), Quarles (ff. 43-53v), North Barsham (ff. 54-55), Holkham (ff. 56-63v), Thorp (ff. 64-71v) and Burnham (ff. 72-76v). Including an historical preface (ff. 1-2). Red and blue (f. 35) initials, some embellished with bearded heads, and other rubrication. See G. R. C. The preface is printed in Dugdale, Monasticon Anglicanum (1848), VI, pp. 487-488. Belonged to Henry Dereham, 1633 (Dugdale); R. Bryer; Taylor Combe (ff. ii); Sir T. Phillipps (MS. 85); and H. L. Bradfer-Lawrence, F.S.A. (d. 1965) (bookplate, f. i); afterwards on deposit at the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, as BL. MS. 4 (see P. M. Giles, 'A Handlist of the Bradfer-Lawrence Manuscripts Deposited on Loan at the Fitzwilliam Museum', Trans. Camb. Bibl. Soc., VI, pp. 86-99). Purchased through Quaritch, March 1981.
Vellum; ff. ii+77. Post-medieval foliation, 1-79, with 14, 15, 16 and half of 58 missing. 290 x 194mm. Details of quiring obscured by the binding. Single columns; for hands, etc., see Bedingfeld, op. cit., pp. xxvii-xxviii. Modern binding of brown morocco with gilt rules; note on f. ii, 'bound by [C.] Lewis 1827'.
