DIPLOMACY: volume of papers apparently acquired by Sir William Trumbull when Secretary of State (1695-1697) in connection with the negotiations with France, 1661-1684, which culminated in the Treaty of Ryswick; circa 1690. Copies and abstracts. Latin and French. Containing abstracts of dispatches and correspondence of Godefroy, Comte d'Estrades, as French ambassador in London (1661-1662) and The Hague (1663-1668) (ff. 10-16, 19-83) and a summary of his negotiations for the sale of Dunkirk to France in 1662 (ff. 17-18), supplementing Stowe 85 and Eg. 2071, the latter containing the full text of d'Estrades's correspondence from London and a fuller account of the Dunkirk negotiations. D'Estrades' Lettres, mémoires et négotiations . . . pendant les années 1663 jusques 1668 were first published by J. Aymon at The Hague, 1700, his Ambassades et négotiations depuis 1637 jusqu'en l'année 1662 in Amsterdam, 1718, and The Sale of Dunkirk . . . taken from the Letters of Count d'Estrades by E. Combe, 1728. The abstracts are preceded (ff. 3-9) by a copy of the articles of agreement of the Truce of Regensburg, 1684, and followed (ff. 84-94) by 'Diverses Remarques sur La hollande', [1679], possibly also by d'Estrades, who was French ambassador at the Congress of Nijmegen at that time. Supplementing Add. 11441-11442. See P. M. Barber, 'Manuscript Sources in the British Library relating to the Peace Congress of Nijmegen, and Connected Negotiations', in The Peace of Nijmegen 1676-1678/9 (Nijmegen, 1979).
