SIR THOMAS PENGELLY: legal commonplace book; 1691. Autograph. Partly Latin. A compilation of notes from decrees, statutes and legal commentators, dating from Pengelly's first admission to the Inner Temple as a law student; he later rose to become Chief Baron of the Exchequer. Presumably once part of Pengelly's archive as listed in HMC, 7th Report, pp. 681-693, although it is not specifically mentioned. Further legal papers of Pengelly from this source are Add. 6722-6727 (including commonplace material in Add. 6726, ff. 16-69), 19773-19775, and 22675. Two further commonplace volumes are stated in the DNB to have been presented to the Inner Temple Library. With the inscription, 'Thomas Pengelly His Book 1691'. Purchased at Christie's, 29 April 1981, lot 135.
Paper; ff. ii+52. Contemporary limp vellum binding, gilt-stamped. 156 x 114mm.
