TOWER OF LONDON: Ordnance entry-book kept at the Tower; 1607-1617. Accounts of powder, shot, weapons and other ordnance stores, mostly delivered to the master gunners and other officers of coastal forts and ships, 1614-1617, as well as supplies for and celebrations at the Tower itself. At the end, reversing the volume (ff. 87-69v), are accounts mostly of supplies received, dating from 1607. Other entries refer to the committal of Robert Carr, Earl of Somerset, and the murder of Sir Thomas Overbury, with copies of some satirical verses on this subject (f. 77v). Under 27 May 1615 (f. 81v) is entered a list of books, including several plays at least one of which is by Shakespeare (Henry VI, Part I), possibly made in connection with one of the prisoners in the Tower. Purchased at Sotheby's, 20 July 1981, lot 35.
Paper; ff. v+87. Including the former wrapper, a later printed map, mounted on canvas. 380 x 155mm.
