MATTHEWS JOURNAL: journal of James Robert Matthews, British Consul-General in Lisbon, with related papers; 1828-1829. Partly drafts and copies. Partly French and German. Covering the period when Matthews was chargé d'affaires following the departure of Sir Frederick Lamb (afterwards 1st Lord Beauvale and 3rd Viscount Melbourne) and prior to the arrival of Colin Mackenzie. Including (f. 37) geological notes on soils in Lisbon and its vicinity, and drafts (f. 38) of an incomplete report on the Portuguese government and people and (f. 40v) of a letter from Matthews to John Midwell, 17 Oct. 1829. Followed (ff. 41-45) by an address of 17 June 1829 to Matthews, signed by the British merchants and residents in Lisbon, with a copy of his reply. Add. 60446-60554 contain material relating to the period of Sir Frederick Lamb's embassy to Portugal. Purchased from Henry Bristow, Cat. 272, item 169, Oct. 1981.
