HARLEY PAPERS: correspondence and papers of the Harley family, chiefly of Sir Robert Harley of Brampton Bryan, co. Heref., M.P. (1579-1656) and his son, Sir Edward Harley, M.P. (1624-1700), with members of the family; 1622-[1713?]. Partly printed. Including (ff. 65-68) two letters from Robert Harley, afterw. 1st Earl of Oxford, to his uncle, Thomas Harley, 1685-1687, and (ff. 221-222) a copy of a character of Oxford by Jonathan Swift, 'which was to have been inserted in the designed History of Queen Anns Reign', [1712-1713]; for which see his History of The Four Last Years of the Queen, in The Prose Works of Jonathan Swift, ed. Herbert Davis, VII (Oxford, 1955), pp. 73-75, 178-180 (the latter is printed from an autograph copy at Longleat, from which the present copy by a member of the Harley family has only literal variations). Supplementing the main Harley archive in the Portland Papers, Add. 70001-70523, and smaller collections in Add. 40621 and 61899. Purchased from Christopher Harley, Esq., of Brampton Bryan, March 1981.
